Motivation

As a DUNE researcher, visiting Fermilab or CERN are usual activities. Breaking from teaching responsibilities is a challenge. If you have a post-doc or advanced graduate student to jump in for two or three lectures, great! If otherwise, remote lecturing from a sequence of well organized slides is straight forward, but with physics teaching, ad-hoc is normal. That is, students pose questions to problems when solutions are often formulated on your feet, with a white board, complete with sketches, diagrams, and loads of equations - this is fun. Granted, if deemed significant, that ad-hoc work might be cast as a Google slide for a future more seamless lecture presentation.

Fortunately FNAL or CERN have dedicated Zoom rooms with white boards, and panable+zoomable cameras, making for a relatively seamless way to remotely teach. But what if otherwise. Once I was enroute to FNAL at a time that overlapped a lecture, so I fashioned a small studio in the truck, with laptop, a document camera using my iPhone, and my faithful Verizon hotspot; the design worked but was kludgy. With the native ability for devices to sync up for the new mac OS Ventura, kludgy becomes elegant, let’s see how.

Design

A Zoom session was opened on a MacBook Air (2019) running the mac OS Ventura (13.1).

An iPhone SE (16.2) was attached via a spring clip to a short adjustable boom. A swivel head connected the clip to the boom to improve alignment of the content for the video.

Managing the connection between the iPhone and the computer’s Zoom session is Continuity Camera which is a built-in feature to Ventura. Continuity Camera includes notices on the parent machine of low power status on the connected iPhone - cool.

The font is legible and clear. The lighting could be improved.

Alignment of your doc camera takes some patience. The bulky College Physics textbook acts as both a pedestal, and an anchor. Taping several legal pad pages together on their back and long side, will allow the teacher to pull these pages seamlessly from right to left as each page is filled with diagrams and equations. Here a fine tip blue ink pen is used, but a fine tipped Sharpie is better.
